"Migrating Dance Archetypes: Circumnavigating the Gulf of Mexico"
Dr. Anita Gonzalez of Georgetown University, builds upon her research about Afro-Mexican coastal dances and considers how migrations of African diaspora populations around the Gulf of Mexico manifest as archetypes in the dances of Mexico and the Caribbean. The presentation introduces concepts from her manuscript Shipping Out: Maritime Circuits, Black Performance, Dialogic Exchange and examines how the migration of dance forms around the Gulf might replicate dialogic engagements prevalent in other maritime migrations.
